Somewhere
around 1988 BOSS started moving production from Japan to Taiwan.
Some products and compact pedals were still produced in Japan though.
There seems to be som confusion on the exact year on which all
productions were moved to Taiwan but it's most likely to be around 1992.
As in the case of silver screw vs. black screw there's a price
difference when it comes to MIJ (Made in Japan) and MIT (Made in
Taiwan) pedals with the former more valuable. This is not only due to
the fact that MIJ pedals are older and obviosly harder to find but many
people seem to think that there's a slight difference in sound quality
too. Those people claims the sound of MIJ pedals to be warmer while the
sound of the MIT compacts are blamed for being thinner and more
metallic. There really is no prove for it but an explanation could be
the ageing of the components inside. The following 15 BOSS compact pedals were produced both in Japan and Taiwan:
